Barcelona's Lionel Messi set to miss El Clasico through injury...

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi will not be fit for the El Clasico clash on Nov. 21 at the Santiago Bernabeu, according to reports.

The Argentine suffered a knee injury during the early stages of his side’s 2-1 win over Las Palmas in late September, and it was initially believed Messi could miss up to eight weeks of action.

But unfortunately the injured left knee has not progressed quickly enough for the 28-year-old to be considered for the Clasico, adding that the club was not expecting his return until the first week of December.

Last week, both Sport and Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo reported that Messi's recovery was one week behind schedule and that he had completely ruled out representing Argentina for World Cup qualifiers against Brazil on Nov. 13 and Colombia four days later.

With nineteen days to go before El Clasico, recent reports said that Messi was having pain during attempts to run and was worried about the knee's condition.

So when the forward does begin that phase of his recovery, it will take another three to four weeks until he’s ready to join his Barcelona teammates on the pitch.

There is no concern that Messi will suffer a relapse of the injury. The focus of the club has always been to ensure that the Argentine’s knee recovers correctly – not quickly.
