It looks like Barça are in the process of branching out into the NWSL, which is a league for women's football.
Sunil Gulati, the president of the US Soccer Federation, has mentioned his ongoing discussions with Barça president Bartomeu, regarding joining the NWSL, which makes one think that the talks are getting serious.
Barcelona is one of the few clubs with excellent development in women's football and moving to the NWSL would be a major push into promoting the club and it's brand to the US.
The National Women's Soccer League is where all the top female stars from US Football compete and the opportunity to bring forth the Barça brand of football to such a large market is instrumental to the club's financial plans. The league's willingness to grow and increase the number of teams is a positive sign foe the Catalans. The inclusion of a team with Barça's expertise in the footballing business could propel the league to greater heights.
When asked during the opening of Barça's Ney York office, Josep Bartomeu was quick to confirm the club's intentions-
The league has been in contact with several interested parties, looking to broaden the reach of the league geographically, with special focus towards California. Barcelona however, will have some thinking to do as to which city to base their operations in. The most obvious solution should be New York, but with a franchise already operatimg out of New Jersey, the club could be forced to explore other potential cities.
While any concrete talks are yet to happen, the idea is tantalising, and mutually beneficial to both parties. There would be a ton of work to do and any appearance of the blaugrana in the NWSL would be well into 2018. However, it should be worth the wait.
Women's football is undergoing a revolution, and it is great to be a part of the change.
