Real Madrid are expected to sign Inter Milan playmaker Mateo Kovacic

Real Madrid are set to complete the signing of Inter central midfielder Mateo Kovacic for a fee in the region of £25 million.

The Croatia international midfielder has not been linked with Real Madrid this summer so however anything is expected in the transfer market.

Madrid have long sought a central midfielder, with the lack of reinforcements in that area exposed last season while Modric was injured, and Benitez has first-hand experience of Kovacic's talent due to his time spent in the Serie A.

The midfielder broke through at Dynamo Zagreb aged just 16 and signed for Inter in 2013. Despite signing a new contract until 2019 last season, he looks set to move to Spanish giants Real Madrid .

It’s believed that the youngster have agreed to the transfer, and should be a Real Madrid player in the next few days - a deal could be finalized by Monday if the negotiation goes well.

Since joining the club in 2013 the player has appeared in 97 games in all competition for Inter Milan where he managed to score 8 goals.
