Jack Wilshere to undergo an operation to his left fibula,Which is likely to lead to the midfielder being out of action for three months.
The 23-year-old has been out with a leg fracture this season but Arsene Wenger hoped he would be fit to return after the international break.
But the injury is taking longer to heal than anticipated and he now requires surgery, which will keep him out until Christmas.
There is no suggestion that it may put his participation in the Euro 2016 finals in jeopardy but Hodgson will be frustrated given it appears Wilshere will not now be available for the four England internationals scheduled this autumn.
Wilshere is a key member of Hodgson’s England squad – as well as the Arsenal team – but has been hampered by a series of injuries throughout his career.
It is also understood that Per Mertesacker is not expected to be involved having just recovered from a virus and also being involved in a minor road traffic accident on Monday.
