Jamaica Woos New York Red Bulls Striker Bradley Wright-Phillips

The Jamaica Gleaner caught up with Reggae Boyz boss Roy Simpson on the possibility of wooing the 30-year-old England born striker.

“Yes, we have reached out to Bradley Wright-Phillips,” Simpson told the Gleaner. “Both parties agreed that it is OK to pursue the paperwork, just in case he decides to take up the offer.”

Wright-Phillips traces his Jamaican lineage through his grandmother. He is also eligible to play for England, Granada and Trinidad & Tobago. Granada tried to persuade Wright-Phillips just over a month ago, but the Red Bulls’ striker turned down the offer citing a disinterest in featuring on a national team level, particularly due to the rigors of the MLS calendar.

“I don’t know if I want to travel to somewhere else to play a game and come back,” Wright-Phillips told Eric Giacometti of MLSSoccer.com. “Over here [in MLS], with the way the league is with games through the summer, you would miss a lot of important games so I don’t know if I really want to do that.”

With a more respectable team in Jamaica calling, Wright-Phillips is giving the offer more careful consideration. The Red Bulls could not make Wright-Phillips available for comment at the time of this piece. However, Red Bulls boss Jesse Marsch did tell reporters at training Monday afternoon that his star striker is thinking about committing to Jamaica National team.

“We talked in passing about it,” Marsch said. “I think he’s considering what it might mean to his life and his career. Not sure yet.”

Bradley Wright-Phillips, 30  was born in Lewisham, England where he spent most of his career featuring for the likes of Manchester City, Southampton, Charlton Athletic, Plymouth Argyle and Brentford on loan. The player currently has a total of 127 career goals with 47 of which he scored at his current club  New York Red Bulls.
