Liverpool have denied approaching Carlo Ancelotti about the possibility of a replacement for current manager Brendan Rodgers.
Media reports claimed the Italian, who was fired by Real Madrid at the end of last season, just a year after leading the to a 10th Champions League title, had been sounded out by owners Fenway Sports Group about taking over at Anfield.
Rodgers has come under pressure at the end of season review after a dismal finale to a campaign which reached its nadir with the 6-1 humbling at Stoke City on the final day, where he was then given the best part of £80m to spend on new signings in the summer transfer window, paying £32.5m for his primary target, Christian Benteke, and a potential £29m for Roberto Firmino.
But despite a stuttering start to this season – they have not won in their last five matches – leaving them 13th in the Premier League.
They face Carlisle in the Capital One Cup tonight before hosting Aston Villa on Saturday ahead of a daunting October, which could increase the pressure on Rodgers future at Liverpool.
