Nuno Espirito Santos |
Nuno Espirito Santo has resigned from his position asValencia's head coach. The Portuguese manager's tenure at Valencia is over and the club will announce his replacement in the near future.
The decision was not influenced by the 1-0 loss to Sevilla. The 41-year-old's mind was made up before then and he spoke to the 'Los Che' owner Peter Lim over the phone on Sunday morning to inform him of his intention to resign. Though the Singaporean tycoon tried to persuade him to stay, the coach held firm on his decision to leave the club.
Nuno feels that the fans turned their back on him and that the atmosphere wasn't accommodating, his assistants along with the players. Chants of "Nuno out" have rung around the Mestalla and the grounds Valencia have visited over the last several months and the former goalkeeper has finally thrown in the towel.
The story broke online while the game was still in process and the Portuguese coach confirmed his decision in a press conference at the Sanchez Pizjuan after the full time whistle.
He explained that he had decided to leave Los Che prior to the defeat to Unai Emery’s side - although he added that his players had no idea it would be his final game in charge.
“Before the game I spoke with the president, with the owner, Peter Lim, and we spoke after the game, too,” he began.
