John Stones hands in transfer request to force £40m move to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have been given a huge boost in their bid to sign John Stones from Everton.

Sky Sports Twitter account post the breaking news:

According to reports from Sky Sports, the Englishman has handed in a transfer request at Goodison Park, in a clear ‘come and get me’ plea to Jose Mourinho.

However, Roberto Martinez, the Everton manager, insisted that this was not the case at all, implying that he expected the youngster to remain at Goodison Park this season.

When asked if there had been a transfer request from Stones, Martinez said: “No, not at all,” as quoted by Sky Sports at the end of last week.

After failing with three bids worth £20 million, £26 million and £30 million, it finally looks like the transfer is headed for a closure. Chelsea have been considering making a final bid of £40 million for the highly-rated centre-back, therefore likely to make the England international the most expensive defensive signing in British history.
